Chicken coops rust after three years? Don’t just look at the price when choosing a chicken coop; these 5 details are key.

 

Many farmers, when purchasing chicken cages, immediately compare prices. However, after two or three years, some find their cages peeling, rusting, or even warping and collapsing, while others’ cages remain shiny and new. Why such a big difference after the same number of years of raising chickens? The problem lies in those easily overlooked details.

Today, based on our years of production experience, we’ll discuss five details you should truly consider when choosing chicken cages.

1. Steel Material: Hot-dip galvanizing and cold-dip galvanizing – the difference is more than just price.

There are two main processes used for chicken cages on the market: hot-dip galvanizing and cold-dip galvanizing (also known as electro-galvanizing).

Comparison Items: Hot-dip galvanizing vs. Cold galvanizing

Process: Immersing steel in high-temperature zinc liquid to form a zinc-iron alloy layer. Applying a zinc layer to the surface via electrolysis at room temperature.

Coating Thickness: 60-80 microns vs. 10-20 microns

Bond Strength: Zinc layer is fused to the steel, not easily peeling off. Zinc layer adhesion is weak, easily scratched.

Service Life: 10-15 years or more vs. Starts to rust in 3-5 years.

Price: Higher vs. Lower

In short: If your chicken coop is damp and ammonia is highly corrosive, hot-dip galvanizing is essential. Spend a little more upfront, but you’ll need to replace fewer cages later.

II. Zinc Coating Thickness: Indistinguishable to the naked eye, but data speaks volumes.

Even within hot-dip galvanizing, thickness varies. Industry standards typically require a zinc coating thickness of at least 60 microns (double-sided) for hot-dip galvanized chicken cages. Some low-priced products, to save costs, only achieve a zinc coating of 40 microns or even less.

How to distinguish? Ordinary farmers, lacking specialized equipment, can check if the manufacturer provides a galvanized layer thickness test report. Reputable manufacturers include a test report with each batch of materials, clearly indicating the coating thickness. If the manufacturer is vague or cannot provide a report, be wary.

III. Welding Process: Missing Welds and Incomplete Welds are the “Breakthrough Points” for Rust

The welded joints of chicken cages are the most prone to rust. Good chicken cages have full, even welds without missing sections. Inferior chicken cages have sparse welds, and may even have obvious burn-through or porosity.

How to Check? After receiving the chicken cage, focus on checking:

· Whether each weld is completely connected

· Whether there are obvious dents or cracks at the weld joint

· Whether the weld joint is smooth to the touch, without burrs

Once a weld is incomplete, the galvanized layer cannot cover the interior, allowing moisture and ammonia to seep in, causing rust to begin from the inside. What appears to be “a little rust” on the surface is actually the entire weld joint starting to rot.

IV. Cage Mesh Wire Diameter: Thicker Wire Means Greater Stability

The load-bearing capacity of a chicken cage depends on the wire diameter of its mesh. In tiered chicken cages, the main support mesh typically has a wire diameter between 2.8mm and 3.2mm. Some lower-priced products may only achieve 2.5mm or even finer wire.

Impact: Thinner wire will cause the mesh to deform and sag after a few years of use, even affecting the operation of automatic feeding and egg collection systems. This deformation will be more pronounced when the upper cages are fully loaded.

Note: Don’t just look at the diameter of a single wire; also check if the mesh size is uniform and the arrangement is neat.

V. Component Quality: Small Parts Determine Big Failures

Feed troughs, latches, door latches, and connectors are often the most prone to failure. Inferior plastic feed troughs will become brittle and break after two years of exposure to sunlight; inferior latches will loosen over time, allowing chickens to escape through the cage door.

How to Choose?

• For feeding troughs, choose injection-molded virgin materials; they offer better toughness and aging resistance.

• Choose thickened stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized parts for buckles and door latches; avoid ordinary iron parts.

• Check if small parts like connecting screws are galvanized.

In summary: When choosing chicken cages, spend your money where it matters.

Cheap chicken cages save on materials but waste time. A chicken cage lasts ten years; the annual cost difference between good and bad cages isn’t significant, but the difference in breeding efficiency, flock health, and maintenance costs is substantial.
